NUC-A-BROODS
Nuc yard #1 is Creek side!!
WE ONLY SELL 7 FRAME MEDIUM NUCS !!!!
Our Nuc-A-Broods are raised in a 10 frame Nuc/Brood Box. Within your Brood Box you’ll get a total of 7 frames.
4 frames of bees, at least 3 of which will contain brood
2 frames containing nectar and pollen
1 frame with foundation for continued laying
Your Nuc will also have the yard number and managers contact info in case of questions or concerns regarding your new Nuc.
Feel free to contact that Yard Manager anytime during your new adventure for advice or help. Our passion is Bee Tending and we want yours to be too! Azure, George, Charlie, and Terry all love to talk about Bees so feel free to call and chat.
Your Nuc will arrive in a 10 frame brood box with a removable screened top and bottom with a cardboard insert to prevent shifting of frames. There are 2 ways to install your new bees.
Option 1: Simply remove the screened bottom and set on top of your own bottom board. You can then remove the upper screen and cardboard insert and insert 3 frames of foundation. Then remove the cap over the candy end of the Queen cage and place it back into center of brood so workers can release the Queen. Then simply feed and cover and you're ready to go. Be sure to check back after 3 days to ensure the Queen has been released. If she has not and the bees are not AGGRESSIVE towards her you may open the cage, lay it on top of the frames and allow her to walk out and greet the rest of the colony. If the bees seem aggressive or agitated with the Queen DO NOT OPEN THE CAGE, instead check back in 2 more days. At this time she should be out and free, and if not you should be able to release her.
Option 2: Remove the top screen and simply place frames of bees into your own brood box and place the Queen back into the center of the brood. (Follow the same steps to release the Queen as outlined in Option 1) This allows you to paint or reuse the provided brood box as desired.
We like to provide more bees and more stores (nectar and pollen) with plenty of room for the Queen to continue to lay eggs until your Bees arrive at their new home! We believe the more bees the better. That is why we like to provide a 7 frame Nuc in a Brood Box, to give them the best opportunity to grow, expand and thrive.
WARNING! Have your hive ready so when you arrive home you can place your new colony in their new hive!
All our Nuc Queens are either the daughter of, or the granddaughter of, an I.I. (Instrumentally Inseminated) Queen in order to provide you with the best genetics we can. We replace our I.I. queens every 3-5 years to maintain good genetics and diversity in our Apiary. Terry purposely lets 15% of his apiary swarm each year in order to get more of our genetics out in the mating area's where drone bees hang out for mating.
We here at J&T Apiary maintain 4 separate locations for our bees. Each yard is closely monitored by an on-site manager who is a trained Bee Tender and manages the health of the bees each and every week. Each one of our Managers have been trained here at Terry’s Bee Academy to a higher level to maintain our higher standards. We only keep a limited number of hives in each yard to maintain the best health of the bees we can.
Our Nucs are available starting in late May weather permitting!
If Mother nature throws us some unusual weather it may delay pick up!!
Please be patient!!
We do not release any Nuc until it passes the strict standards that Terry has set. Rest assured when you get your new bees they will be the best we can provide! Terry inspects EVERY Nuc before releasing it to a customer.

Hygienic Behavior
Worker bees detect and uncap cells that contain infected or dead brood before the pathogen can spread. This behavior can help control diseases like American Foulbrood, Chalkbrood, and Varroa.
Varroa Sensitive Hygiene (VSH)
A behavioral trait in which bees detect and remove brood infested by Varroa Mite, which is considered to be one of the most dangerous pests for Honey Bees Worldwide.
